Frequently Asked Questions for Applicants

What can CVC Pay?

Please click here.

Do I have to pay CVC back?

You may be asked to pay CVC back if you receive a settlement from a civil lawsuit that covers the same expenses paid by the CVC Board.  If this occurs, you may request that the Board waive their right to reimbursement by providing documentation to show that the civil settlement and CVC payments do not cover all of your crime related losses.

If CVC pays, can the offender still be held accountable for the expenses?

Yes. If there is a criminal case, CVC will ask the judge to order that the offender pay back CVC through restitution.

You may also seek restitution for anything that CVC does not pay.

How long does it take for the Board to make a decision?

There are many factors that can delay processing your claim.  Most decisions are made within 30-60 days of receiving a complete application.

The Board meets once a month.  Once we have a complete application and have verified your losses, the Board will review your request. All documentation must be submitted and verified at least 1 week prior to the Board meeting to be reviewed.

How will I know what the Board decides?

You will receive an e-mail or letter indicating the Board’s decision.  Notification is mailed no more than 10 days after the Board meeting.

You may also call 719-520-6000 or e-mail daovictimcompensation@elpasoco.com to request an update on your application.

I have been approved. When will I be paid?

The CVC Board issues payments on the first business day of each month.  The Board will pay approved bills that were submitted by the 10th of the month. If you have questions about your bill, please contact the program at 719-520-6000 or e-mail daovictimcompensation@elpasoco.com.

Why does my medical insurance have to be billed?

CVC is the “payer of last resort.” This means that all forms of insurance, such as private insurance, Worker’s Compensation, Colorado Indigent Care Program, or Medicaid/Medicare, must be billed first.

Is CVC like medical insurance?

No. CVC is only available to eligible crime victims for certain crime related losses.  We do not have contracts with service providers.

Can I go to any doctor/dentist/mental health provider that I choose?

Yes. CVC does not contract with any providers. You can choose your own provider.  However, the provider must be licensed and in good standing in their field of practice.

Damage was done inside my home. Does CVC pay for repairs?

CVC only covers damages to exterior doors, locks or windows.

Are restitution and CVC the same?

No. They are two separate processes and require separate paperwork.  Restitution can only be requested if there is a criminal case that goes to court. A judge will determine if restitution will be ordered.

Victim Compensation can be requested when an eligible crime occurred regardless of whether there is a court case.
