District Court - Felony Prosecution

District Court is the largest unit in the District Attorney’s Office and handles the most serious and violent crimes, including murder, kidnapping, sexual assault, arson, robbery, and burglary.  


There are 57 experienced prosecutors, 16 paralegals, 14 legal assistants and 3 restitution specialists, and a crime data analyst that serves both Teller and El Paso Counties.  The 4th DA’s staff processes criminal dockets in 19 felony court divisions.

District Court is structured to serve victims seek justice. It includes specialty assignments such as Appeals, Extraditions, Sealing/Forfeitures, Restitution Units and Specialty Courts.  The specialty courts are designed to expedite cases and to provide respondents the opportunity to address and manage problems.  The specialty courts are also designed to engage problems such as addictions through probation, court supervision, and close judicial oversight.  These courts include:

The district also operates two specialty units:

Organized Crime Unit

 Includes the prosecution of intricate cases and offenders with the largest potential impacts on the community.

Special Victims Unit (SVU)

Specializes in cases involving sex crimes and crimes against children.
